During this farewell audience, which lasted nearly an hour, both Alamine Ousmane Mey and his guest looked back at the state of cooperation between Cameroon and Switzerland. More so, they took stock of actions undertaken as part of the Steering and Monitoring Committee of the Swiss Alternative Funding (FCV) scheme and the holding of the “PROMOTE” trade fairs in Yaounde in 2022 and 2024.
Martin Strub, who arrived in Cameroon in 2021, has played a leading role in enhancing bilateral cooperation between Switzerland and Cameroon. The Swiss diplomat expressed his wish to see this partnership between the private sectors of both countries intensify and told the press: “To date, some Swiss companies present in Cameroon in the infrastructure sector, including Cimencam and others involved in the development of the port of Kribi”.
In 2017, the Minister for the Economy and the Swiss Ambassador to Cameroon signed a cooperation agreement worth €5 million, i.e. about CFAF 3 billion, relating to the use of the Alternative Funding resulting from the conversion of the debt of the Cameroon National Electricity Corporation (SONEL) to support Cameroonian SMEs in certain sectors. These include agriculture, renewable energy, water and sanitation, etc. In 2020, these funds were allocated to three Cameroonian SMEs under three grant agreements, each worth one billion CFA francs. These resources were used to fund development initiatives in the Far-North, North, North-West, and West Regions.
